The gift that just keeps giving …

We learnt so much from the Brighton Summit organised by the fabulous Brighton Chamber team. As mentioned in our rundown, the Summit was a truly inspiring event that left a profound impact on all of us. All the speakers were fantastic, but they definitely saved the best ‘til last.

Lord Simon Woolley, Principal of Homerton College, was just incredible to listen to. His stories were insane, and his black book is bulging with anecdotes and contacts that most of us can only dream of. What’s more is, they’re not gained by birth or status; they’re earned by putting himself out there, standing by his beliefs, and acting on them.

Lord Simon Woolley is a renowned advocate for social justice and inclusion. His speech received a well-deserved standing ovation, with an extended round of applause; to be honest we could have listened to his stories for a lot longer. The time flew!

His valuable insights on being human and the sense of belonging can be related to everything we do. So here are our top take aways.

  1. “We all want to try to belong”.

Ever heard of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs? As humans we share the long-term, psychological need for connection and community, which Maslow defines as love and belonging.Maslow's hierarchy of needs pyramid

So, with this in mind, seek out the companies where you know you belong.

  1. “Bring your true self”.

Authenticity, in any situation, encourages transparent and open relationships. Look out for opportunities to share your unique qualities and aspirations without the fear of judgment or pretence. Identify businesses that allow you to showcase your genuine skills, experiences, and personality.

  1. “The best at being human is about doing”.

Recruitment (that’s where we come in!) is about people. Recruiters act as your “wing team”, fighting your corner. They (we) spend time getting to know you, finding out what makes you tick, and ensuring you’re presented as the fabulous human being you are, to the right business for you.

  1. “You have the right to be vulnerable, scared, and anxious”.

You don’t have to conceal or shy away from these emotions. In the job search application, and interview, it’s common to experience feelings of vulnerability, fear, and anxiety. As your supportive “wing team,” we create a safe and supportive space for you to openly share your concerns and anxieties. This enables you to present the best version of yourself during interviews and secure your dream job.

  1. “Fear less, love more”.

This is our favourite takeaway. Fear often holds us back and we need to overcome this fear to embrace change. At GoGecko, we are open to your unique background and experiences. Listening to your stories is one of the things we love most about our job and we can’t wait to help you utilise them to showcase your unique talent.
