Broaching scary conversations with your employer:

You want to work from home more often, you want your hours to be more flexible, but talking to your manager about this to change your situation is scary…

What’s the best way to broach scary conversations with your employer?

It’s common to think asking for adjustments is going to make you look like a ‘less desirable’ employee. However, this is not the case at all.

People change, and what worked for you 2 years ago might not be what works for you now. It is incredibly important that you communicate your needs and wants. Your company will likely be more flexible than you are expecting.

The best way to go about this is to schedule a meeting in advance and let your manager know what it is about so they are prepared.

Once you are talking to them, clearly set out what it is you are after, and the reasons behind this. You are both humans before employee/manager and connecting on this level will make it easier to navigate this conversation.

Go into it knowing what you are willing to compromise on. As much as you’d like certain adjustments, it needs to work for both you and the company at the end of the day. Saying what you are ready to compromise on will show them that you have thought this through, and you take their needs into consideration too, which will go a long way in your negotiation.

The sooner you have that talk, the closer you are to adjusting your work life to fit your needs.

What are you waiting for?
