It’s that time again. You’re probably starting to reflect on the year gone by. Maybe you are having reviews with your manager or you are trying to decide what you want out of work and life next year.

It can be a strange time of year when even though we should be feeling full of festive cheer the dread of the next year and what that looks like can also take hold.

In this blog, I share my top tips to help you shine, be the best version of yourself, and be motivated in your career. After all, ’tis the season for more than just festivities—it’s the time to unwrap some renewed energy whether it’s self-improvement, learning new things, a career change or a promotion.

I will be practising what I preach too… So if you want to talk through this and the methods I use happy to book a 1:1 chat either over the phone or on Teams and Zoom. I have availability on the 27th December and then the first week in Jan. Let’s all start 2024 as we mean to go on.

My Tips:
Tip number 1 – It’s time for a positive sleigh ride.

Stay positive and resilient—view deadlines and feedback as opportunities for growth. Every challenge has a solution, and persistence leads to rewards. Make mistakes and ask for feedback. Be curious and always ask questions!

I am always asking those I trust (family, friends and connections) for feedback and advice.

Tip number 2 – Gift yourself kindness.

Challenge negative self-talk by focusing on what you have, not what you lack. Embrace your uniqueness; improvement and success are defined by your journey, not by comparisons. Cultivate being a people person, communicating effectively, excelling in teamwork, nurturing relationships, and actively listening.

I have coined a phrase “ be the essence of you not the comparison of others”; I have started a gratitude book just to recognise the positives of my day. Even the little things that have bought me pleasure – like my son’s cracking a joke and making me howl with laughter.

Tip number 3 – Must have mistletoe motivation.

What or who inspires you?  Short-term setbacks are insignificant when your best self remains in focus. Pushing yourself will help you reach and be motivated in your career aspirations, and be thought of as a good employee or good prospect for a promotion or new career move.

I am always learning and my Christmas read is “ The Chimp Paradox” by Prof Steve Peters. I have read it before but I am giving it another go (another blog in 2024 coming your way).

Tip number 4 – Ready for a Skilful Sleigh Upgrade?

Elevate your talents by continually up-skilling. Attend seminars, join meet-ups, and explore free resources to stay ahead. This does not need to be expensive either – you’d be surprised at the amount of free content out there – you just need to do your research. Take initiative, prioritise goals, challenge yourself, and step out of your comfort zone.

I do this constantly and sign up for free events regularly. LinkedIn is a good source and also any groups that are relevant to your profession.

Don’t just learn new things professionally. I took up Samba drumming this year and absolutely love it!

Tip number 5 – Your Carolling Career Evaluation awaits.

Regularly evaluate your career satisfaction. Love what you do, and if needed, chat with your manager about changes that could enhance your joy at work. It’s important to know the things you do well at work so you can understand the specific ways you contribute to your team, department, and organisation.

I do this with my team and encourage them to challenge themselves, empowering them to take action. Even outside your comfort zone you grow and learn.

Summary:

Being your authentic self means to embrace the connection of your past experiences, present interests, and future goals. It’s a journey that starts with self-awareness and understanding. Visualise what you want out of life and work, break down the steps needed, and work backwards from there!

The more you practice these tips, the more proficient you’ll become. Remember, it’s not a race – start slow, but start now. 2024 is ready for you.

And don’t forget if you want to take the next step with a team of wingwomen who have got your back, book some time in with me either on December the 27th or first week in Jan 2024. Lets make this year the best one yet. It’s time to get merry and motivated in your career!
